If U R a Sci-Fi Geek ... (Part 2)

This is part two. How to identify if YOU as a Sci-Fi Geek.

I'll admit it.  Loving Science Fiction has influence my writing, now.  As I said, the film that clinched my Sci-Fi addiction was "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

While all the girls I knew were going "ga-ga" over Davy Jones of the Monkees, I was reading comic books and watching any science fiction movie I could. In those days, of course, there wasn't cable with a guide.  There wasn't even a paper telling us what was going to be shown that day.  It was a hit and miss thing.

The next movie that I loved was "When Worlds Collide".  Now, if you  haven't seen it, and are a Prime Member on Amazon, you can watch it free.

This movie is a must for all sci-fi nuts.  I don't know how much of it is science fiction, or science fact, but we do know that the moon affects tides, and even emotions.  But, that is neither here nor there.  It's a good movie, and I believe it speaks to human nature.

One character who brought the human nature of man was John_Hoyt who played Sydney Stanton -  a bitter and hateful man who, unlike other philanthropists who gave their money freely to build rockets, demanded a place on the final rocket.  The choice to be on the rocket were, as we all have seen before, only "smart" people such as scientists and doctors who would be much better at helping humanity survive on the unknown Zyra, and only their names were put into a box, and chosen by lot - except for the main characters who were going (big surprise).  Ordinary people such as you and I would be left on Earth to perish.

This is where, I believe, is one of the best scenes in the movie.  As the time arrived to board, and take off, the ones who were to be left behind rebelled, and tried to attack those boarding, because they were scared, and didn't want to die.

Just prior to this, Stanton tried to explain to Cole Hendron that such was the nature of man, and that they would attack.  Where Hendron told him that it wouldn't happen, because everyone was civilized, and agreed to be chosen by lot.

Hendron was stunned when he realized Stanton was right.  In the end, Hendron admitted he was wrong.  He refused to board the rocket to his daughter's sadness, and he held Stanton back as well.  He is so desperate to get on it, even though the ship was launching, he actually got out of his chair.

Science Fiction is better than Science Fact in some ways, because it delves into the nature of man, and tells us the truth about ourselves - a truth that we do not want to admit.  Whereas Science Fact deals in Science Fact, but without the human equation.

There are scientists who admit that the reason they became such was because of Science Fiction.

It is not Science Fact that drives inventions, or anything else.  It is Science Fiction that drives Science Fact.

I've wanted to say this for years in public.  Science deals in facts, but it is the DREAMERS of this world that comes up with the ideas. Once the dreamers have dreamed something up, that's when Science Fact takes over if something in Sci-Fi grabs their fancy.  Without the dreamers, first, there can be no science!

Authors can dream up all kinds of ideas, and even TV or film.  But, it is those dreams that are translated into fact, and Science makes the dream fact.
