I am LK Kelley, author of "The White Wolf Prophecy - Mating - Book 1" of "The White Wolf Prophecy Trilogy" having not only edited it since I am professional Independent Book Editor, but designed my own book cover. I one of the lucky ones who can do these things.
Most new writers would probably never get a chance to ever publish their books with the LARGE publishing houses! I chose and Independent Book Publisher - ISOTUT and publisher, Mike Kiser, for one reason - he is extremely excited to place brand new authors for the public! He is so enthusiastic about them, it's refreshing! I am one of these new authors. Make no mistake! Do not be fooled by the name of the Publishing Company. I like this name, because it encompasses EVERY genre of book. Every subject.
For me, everything has gone smoothly, and I haven't had one problem! I want you to know that I would never have done this if I did not BELIEVE in my own book, "The White Wolf Prophecy ~ Mating ~ Book 1" of "The White Wolf Prophecy Trilogy". This is very important to me - enough to design my own website, a FB author Page and Fan Page along with a Google Plus author page, and Fan Page as well. I also write blogs weekly!
Now, to the differences. Like many of us, I have always said,
But, questions come to mind, such as what publisher would be willing to accept a new author? Who would I choose? Usually, large publishers don't accept most new authors unless they are important. It's very difficult to even get them to read it!
I'm going to let you into a little secret about media, and how they operate. You can e-mail, put everything up on Facebook, Google Plus, etc. Mail your manuscript all you wish. Media get tons of requests daily, if not hourly. And, if a Subject line isn't interesting to them, is too point blank, or too vague, they delete the e-mail right on the spot without ever having read it. Most people never get an answer because their e-mails ARE deleted.
Manuscripts are returned, read or not, along with a form letter. Authors send them out over and over only to be disappointed again. Physical Books are still the better way of having a great book out in the publishing world. They are read, re-read, edited, and re-edited, until they are almost, if not, perfect.
Self-publishing is great! IF you can figure out how to format for that media since most all of these are e-books. Each type of format - book, and different e-books - has to be done separately. There is no continuity across formats. Most don't have the capability. Most have rampant errors throughout in grammar, formatting, and punctuation. Many publishers have editors within, but many Independents do not. Editing is crucial to a good booko, and should be taken seriously. Most e-books are not edited properly. The single biggest complaint is grammar and punctuation.
So, how to choose? First, look into as many publishers as possible. See what they offer, charge, and how much help they will give to you in advertising your book.
Second, I decided to go the route of an Independent Publisher, and I chose Mike Kiser of ISOTUT, because of the reasons just listed. Many new authors do not realize that it is the author's responsibility to publicize their own books. Book publishers help in some ways, but it's up to the author in the long haul.
And, I do this as well. Mike Kiser has guided me along the way, and I have learned a great deal about the process. There are tons of independent Publishers! I chose a Colorado publisher, because I have direct ties to that state even though I reside in Arkansas.
ISOTUT's very list of authors show that it is, indeed, a publisher that accepts every single genre known to mankind.
In general, don't give up. If you can find one you can work with, and who is willing to accept new authors with enthusiasm, and who will lead you on your journey to become a published author, then contact them. I also chose the PHYSICAL book, first, simply because many people want the book in their hands. Later, I will have it formatted to e-books. I love to read both ways. And, one thing I have actually discovered is that there are a LOT of really GREAT new authors out there, but are never known.
